‘When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot manifest, strength cannot fight, wealth becomes useless, and intelligence cannot be applied.’

Herophilus

AIDS does not discriminate. Your Patrick Batemans are in the same irresponsibility league as sexist men in underdeveloped communities. Social stigma continues to blame and highlight Gay communities or the cultural problems in Africa or Asia. Awareness and precaution are still overlooked by the same men who think women can deal with the consequences of sexual duty. The patriarchal systems in place would sooner offer a man a new car and his wife a hysterectomy than educate the male. We also have the missionary position in these cultural cul-de-sacs; religious marketing exchanged for healthcare. Women and children should not bear the shame of the arrogant or inconsiderate male. Those affected by the disease need our acceptance, acknowledgment and support. They should not be viewed as condemned outcasts or untouchables.

Celebrity-studded concerts can allow a trend in ribbon-wearing days or record sales but the underlying need for education and responsible prevention rests with individuals. Take control of your health, sexual activity and interaction with others by being aware and accountable. There is no pleasure or love in inheriting the thoughtlessness of another.

Prevention is the cure.
